Mador Architects were appointed to undertake the master planning and detailed design of the redevelopment of the Cormorant Hotel in the village of Golant, overlooking the Fowey Estuary in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The proposal consists of 9 detached residencies that break down the existing volume into a series of smaller forms, six to the north and three to the south.

The homes nestle into the existing verdant and picturesque landscape in a form that evolved out of careful examination of the existing context and character of the locality; a small, coastal Cornish village. The design approach integrates landscape and architecture in response to the spectacular natural surroundings and local architecture and material and was evolved through discussions with the local community and the Cornish Design Review Panel. A palette of natural stone, brick with slurry wash, timber boarding and slate roofs stems from the context and is detailed in a contemporary manner.
